Raw Dried Sea Moss in South Africa: Preparing Homemade Gel

Black-gloved hands holding pink and golden strands of sea moss against a white background.

Marine Sea Moss Raw Dried Sea Moss is a single-ingredient food made from wildcrafted, sun-dried Eucheuma cottonii. Our 100 g pouch is for those who prefer soaking and blending their own sea moss gel at home.

Unlike ready-made gel, raw dried sea moss needs preparation before adding it to recipes.

Preparing your sea moss

Follow the preparation instructions on your pouch:

Rinse the dried sea moss thoroughly to remove any visible sand or debris.
Soak in purified water for 12–24 hours.
Drain, then blend with purified water until smooth, adjusting the water gradually to achieve your preferred consistency.
Use clean utensils and a clean container throughout preparation.

Using homemade sea moss gel

Once prepared, blend your gel into smoothies, stir it into oatmeal or mix it into soups and sauces. Start with a small amount and adjust to suit your recipe and preferred texture.

Preparing your own gel lets you control its consistency. For an option without the soaking and blending, explore our ready-made Sea Moss Gel.

Storing raw dried sea moss

Keep the unprepared sea moss in a cool, dry, dark place with the pouch securely closed. Follow the storage guidance and best-before date on your pack. Prepared gel needs refrigerated storage; it should not be stored like the dried product.
